Singapore Blogging Workshops, Do You Really Need Them?

July 2nd, 2008

I’m surprised that there are blogging workshops which need you to pay a fee in Singapore. I stumbled on a Singapore company called finggle in my routine online surfing. They have this 1-day SEO Blogging Workshop that costs S$195.

Introduction

The SEO Blogging Workshop is designed to expand the skill and knowledge of search engine marketing and social media marketing.

Objective

You will learn to set up WordPress blog that is SEO-friendly to achieve top ranking in search engines such as Google and Yahoo and social marketing techniques to harness the power of social networks.

Course Outline

1. The advantages of using Blog vs Conventional Static Site
2. Blogging Platforms and Blog Engines
3. The Pros and Cons of Using WordPress
4. WordPress Themes and Plugins
5. Step-by-step guide to installing WordPress in 5 Minutes
6. Using SEO-friendly WordPress Themes
7. Extending WordPress with WordPress Plugins
8. How to Structure a Successful Blog for Business
9. SEO Copywriting for Blog
10. Social media marketing techniques
11. Case Study

Looking at the course outline, no. 1 to no. 7 information can actually be found on the web or on wordpress.org. The meat of this course should concentrate on no. 8 to no. 10. What shook me is that everything here is covered from 9am to 3pm and yes that’s just 6 hours and you can get a SEO-friendly blog that can achieve top rankings in search engines. Really crap!

I believe you can get rid your phobia in 6 hours if you attend Tony Robbins’ hyper-self-motivating seminar but using just 6 hours to reach this ultimate blogging objective is impossible. Either the tutors are blogging + SEO gods or their students are geniuses.

Save the $195 and buy yourself (and your family) a good dinner.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

What’s life after The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? Yes, that’s what I want to know after watching the trailer of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at http://www.fighttosavenarnia.com.sg The four Pevensie children are here again to help Prince Caspian in his struggle for the throne.

We can see the familiar Lion and the White Witch but what I want to see are the epic battle scences of the movie. Not bloody but this second movie packs more action and punches than the first one and that’s what I’m looking for.

Can’t wait…

This Guy Fakes His Feed Count, Super Lame

April 30th, 2008

fake-feed-count.jpg

This guy, Richard Palace (http://www.richardpalace.com/), got 28259 readers but how come his blog looks dead with no activities at all? I mean no comments on extremely few written posts. The reason is that his feed count is fake. Check his source code for feedburner count.

A real feed count image source is from feedburner, that looks like this.

What a lame blogging tactic. Please do not learn from him.

6 Tips For Batching Up Your Blogging

April 27th, 2008

I learnt the concept of batching from the 4-Hour Work Week book by Timothy Ferriss. Simply, batching means you put all similar, related tasks together and do it in one straight shot. Batching can also apply to blogging.

Unless you are working in a must-post-everyday blogging environment, the reality is that you don’t have to post everyday to build a solid blog.

Here’s some background on my blogging tasks. Currently, I’m writing for 3 blogs and need to churn out 12 posts every week. Although these blog posts are short, I still need time to do some research and write them out. In the past, I’m blogging every day. Believe me; this will eventually lead to a blogger’s burnout. Right now, I finish these 12 short posts in one single day and leave the rest of the week to do stuff I like or on some days, add posts to my blogs.

Below are the steps I did to batch my blogging or Batch Blogging.

1. Identify Your Sacred Blogging Period

The Sacred blogging period varies from person to person. Some are morning bloggers while others are night writers. There’ll be a period in a day in which you find yourself in your best blogging self. Identify that period and make full use of it for blogging.

2. Eliminate Distractions

If you are batch blogging, just blog and do nothing else. Eliminate all distractions. Turn off those IMs, Twitter, Facebook, shoutbox or even handphone and stop to constantly check your email, forums etc. Batch blogging needs your full attention, not your @imisstwitter.

3. Aim To Write Timeless Posts

If your blog doesn’t require you to write newsy, time-sensitive posts, aim to write timeless blog posts instead. What I mean “timeless” is that these posts are time proof. Whether your readers read such posts now, 1 year or even 5 years later, they’ll still find these timeless posts useful, interesting and fresh. Some examples of my timeless posts are here.

4. Batch Related-Topics And Blog

Let’s say I’m writing for a video games blog, a celebs blog and a tech blog, I’ll dedicate some hours to write only for that video games blog and the next few hours to blog for that celebs blog. Don’t jump around blogging for one blog then jump to the next blog in the next minute, it doesn’t save time.

5. Make Use Of Your Feed Reader

I group my RSS feeds into meaningful categories in my Google Reader for fast scanning. Very often, material for your blogging posts usually comes from a handful of sources only. In any case, doing a search in your reader will help you find the relevant stuff.

6. Take Short Breaks

I have short attention span and I’m not Superman. I usually take a short break, usually is a Power Nap, after writing 2 or 3 blog posts. Breaking during Batch Blogging is important. Batch Blogging is in one sitting but having breaks can help you blog faster.

Do you have any more suggestions or comments on Batch Blogging? I love to hear them.
